  • For many students, balancing work, academics, and social life is challenging, especially with a limited income.

If you have a limited income, it’s crucial to develop a system that helps you effectively spend money on a tight monthly budget.

    Prioritize Recurring Expenses

Financial obligations vary among university students because no two students have the same situation. Despite the differences, there are many similarities that most students will encounter in their recurring expenses, including the following:

    • Rent
    • Utilities
    • Gas
    • Car insurance
    • Groceries
    • Tuition and fees
    • Various subscriptions

To ensure you make payments on time and have enough money available, create a list of your recurring expenses and their costs.

This way, you know how much money you need each month to pay these priority expenses and won’t spend money elsewhere if it means cutting into funds for these necessities.

    Evaluate Subscriptions

The cost of streaming services, food delivery programs, and many other subscriptions can quickly add up. However, when you’re on a tight monthly budget, it’s essential to spend your money effectively.

If your subscriptions continue to grow, it might be time to reevaluate spending on these items.

Using the list of recurring expenses you made, add up how much total money you’re spending on subscriptions. If you only have a few services that aren’t taking up a large portion of your budget, canceling isn’t necessary. However, if you’re spending over 100 dollars on various services when money is tight, it might be time to cancel a few.

In fact, cutting down on subscriptions is one of the easiest money-saving hacks that can help lower monthly costs. To decide which ones to cancel, weigh the value the service brings to your life against how the cost affects your budget. Then, cancel the subscriptions you don’t use often or that don’t greatly improve the quality of your life.

    Make Lists Before Grocery Shopping

Grocery shopping is a recurring expense, but the cost may change each month depending on fluctuating food prices and which foods you need.

To help you stay on budget, allot a restricted amount of money for groceries each month. From there, create a detailed grocery list. Without a list, it’s easy to wander through the store and pick up items you don’t truly need. Sticking to your list will help you stick to the budget and eat meals that support your financial goals.

Save 20 Percent of Your Income

Even though saving can feel impossible on a tight budget, by sticking to a strict plan, you can save money! Each month, try to set aside 20 percent of your monthly income into a savings account. However, even though 20 percent is the goal, don’t be afraid to lower the number to 15 or 10 percent. In the end, any money going toward savings is something to be proud of that will help you financially in the future.

Spending effectively on a strict budget can seem daunting, but trust in the process and don’t give up. After just six months of sticking to the plan, you’ll watch your savings grow and feel financially stable.
