Grad school is a complicated time of transition as students gain more expertise in a certain field. It’s often more intense than undergrad but has different demands than a full-time career. Bedroom: Desk
While a comfortable bed is the star of your grad school bedroom, a desk is also important. You will need a specific place to study for your advanced classes while grading work from lower-level classes. While you can study and grade on your bed or at the kitchen table, those locations can distract your focus. Invest in a sturdy desk with lots of storage as you start grad school.
Bathroom: Drawer Storage
We tend to use lots of small items in the bathroom, such as washcloths and soap bars. Many of us also use a mirror or shelf in our bathroom as a medicine cabinet, which means there are lots of little bottles around. It’s easy for all these small items to get mixed together. When you need to find something, you must dig through the mix and waste time. Save time instead with drawer storage. Find something that can slide onto the closet shelf or into the vanity drawer, and give each small thing its place.
Dining/Kitchen: Anti-Fatigue Rug
You already know that your dining and kitchen areas require a table and chairs. However, you’ll spend a lot of your time in these areas standing. Most people stand to cook and wash dishes, especially since many apartments don’t feature dishwashers. After walking around campus all day and standing to lecture, your feet will protest this additional standing. Buy an anti-fatigue rug for your kitchen so that you can stand comfortably for kitchen chores.
Living: Sleeper Sofa
The star of the living room is the sofa. One of the sofa styles that look great in any home, including your grad school apartment, is a sleeper sofa. Many sleeper sofas look like regular sofas before converting into a sleeper, so you get a place to sit and a place to sleep. If you have a studio apartment, this can act as your main bed. If you have a separate bedroom, then a sleeper sofa is the perfect place to relax after a long week of grad school. You can also use it to host overnight guests.
Your grad school apartment needs more than four furniture items. However, the items we listed often go forgotten until you start living in your apartment and realize it isn’t functional.
