  • Perseverance is an incredibly important skill that can help children feel self-confident and succeed in life.

Unfortunately, it’s not something that comes easily to any of us, especially children.

Fortunately, you can learn how to teach children about perseverance. Use the ideas below to help the children in your life persevere.

Unveiling the True Meaning of Perseverance

Before you can teach children about perseverance, you must ensure they understand what the word means. Perseverance means sticking with something even when it’s hard, boring, or frustrating. It’s the ability to keep going even when you want to give up. Children must know that perseverance is not about being perfect but about having the determination and resilience to keep pushing forward no matter what.

Building Resilience and Fostering Growth in Children

In addition to knowing the definition of perseverance, children must understand why perseverance is so important. They must know that it’s not just about a result like getting good grades or winning a game. Perseverance is about building character, developing inner strength, and achieving long-term goals. Children learn that anything is possible if they work hard enough when they persevere and develop the confidence and self-belief that they need for a successful life.

    Nurturing Small Wins

Children are more likely to persevere if they feel like they are making progress. Encourage them to set achievable goals and celebrate even the smallest successes. A good example is children learning to brush their teeth without reminders. Celebrate the small successes—going from needing two reminders a day to one reminder a day is great progress.

These small wins will build their confidence and motivate them to keep pushing forward. Help them to see that every effort they make, every small victory they achieve, is a step toward the bigger picture.

    Creating Perseverance Through Play

Perseverance is a metaphysical concept, not something concrete, so it can feel difficult and potentially boring to teach. You can make it fun and engaging by turning it into a game or a challenge.

For example, you could challenge your child to complete a puzzle or a project in a certain amount of time. As your child works on the puzzle or project, encourage them to keep going even when things get tough. By the end of the challenge, your child will have learned that they can accomplish anything if they keep trying.

    Reading Books About Perseverance

Perseverance is one of the many important lessons kids can gain from Bible study or reading other books—verses like Galatians 6:9 and stories like The Little Engine That Could bring the concept to life. Children will come to understand that they can learn and develop perseverance over time and will remember these stories when they need reminding to persevere.

Knowing how to teach children about perseverance is difficult but not impossible, much like perseverance itself. Remember, this is a skill that all of us must learn and practice over time, so you and the children you care for will get better together.
