One of the toughest things about being a college student is budgeting.
As a college student, you’re likely strapped for cash.
It may feel like the only thing you can do is put off certain expenses until you can save up the money. The real truth is that there are some expenses you need to fork the cash over for earlier rather than later.
From textbooks, rent, and utilities to car repairs and transportation expenses, there are many draws on your wallet that you shouldn’t put off for long. Prioritize and put aside cash for these expenses to be able to handle the rigors of college life.
Textbooks
One of the most obvious college-related expenses that may startle you is textbooks, which can be exorbitantly costly. As you’re first transitioning into the new semester, it can be tempting to put off purchasing textbooks.
In fact, you may not end up needing it for an assignment for a week or two. However, you shouldn’t put off purchasing your needed textbooks for multiple reasons.
First, you want to ensure you have access to it so you can complete assignments. Second, you want to be sure that the textbook doesn’t get sold out. For this reason, prioritize getting textbooks as soon as possible.
Car Repairs
Another expense that will save more of your money in the long term if taken care of quickly is car repairs. Car repairs are likely at the bottom of your to-do list. However, taking care of car repairs early on can save you a bundle later down the road.
If you put off things like windshield replacement after a rock hits and cracks your window, you’ll find yourself in larger financial trouble when your entire windshield cracks and shatters. Instead, spend the money now to get the little repairs fixed before they turn into large problems that render your vehicle undrivable.
Transportation Expenses
Getting to and from class is a difficult task at times. However, transportation expenses may be on your ‘I’ll get to it later’ list. Transportation is a must-have, so you should plan out what your monthly expenses will be.

Rent and Utilities
Having a place to live should come first on your list of priorities. Your monthly rent and utility payments should be the first expenses that come out of your budget.
Unfortunately, these can be some of your biggest expenses. This makes it easy to want to put off. However, you don’t want to end up getting evicted because you couldn’t catch up with all those missed rent payments.
When it comes to college expenses, there are a lot of them. While it may seem difficult to create a budget that works, it’s doable. Just be sure to fit the above four items at the top of your list to ensure financial success throughout your college years.
