  • The job market is competitive, and a cover letter is one way you can stand out.

However, writing an impressive cover letter is no easy feat.

You must remember to introduce yourself well and share your relevant skills so that potential employers know you’re the best fit for the job. You should always mention at least one of the following four skills in your cover letter.

    Communication Skills

Communication skills are critical in almost every job. Employers need people who communicate effectively, both in writing and speaking. If you’re good at communicating, mention it in your cover letter.

When writing about your communication skills, provide specific examples of situations where you had to communicate something complex. For instance, you can mention how you wrote a report that was easy to understand and helped your team complete a project successfully. You could also mention a successful oral presentation in a college class or internship.

    Time Management

Like communication, time management is an important skill for any job. Recruiters and employers need to know that you can complete the required tasks on time and under pressure. In your cover letter, mention how you manage your time effectively.

Provide specific examples of how you prioritize your tasks and meet tight deadlines. You can mention how you scheduled tasks to meet your academic deadlines while also working a part-time job. If a previous job helped you develop time management skills in a specific way, describe that process.

    Problem-Solving Skills

Many jobs require problem-solving skills, from computer programming to police work. All employers want their employees to effectively identify and solve problems. If you’re good at problem-solving, make sure to mention it in your cover letter.

When writing about your problem-solving skills, provide specific examples of how you tackled a complex problem and came up with a solution. Mention how you created a study guide for you and your classmates to review difficult material before a test. Or you can explain your role on a problem diagnostic team or any other relevant experience.

    Teamwork Skills

While some jobs are solitary, most will require you to play well with others. Recruiters and employers want people who can effectively work in a team and collaborate with others. You should include these skills in a cover letter for a job.

Make sure to mention how you’re a team player and have worked effectively in teams in the past. Focus on how you collaborated with others to achieve a specific goal. Did you brainstorm the theme of a group project with partners and receive a great grade? Have you volunteered in a group and seen a positive impact? Write about those experiences.

There are many things you should include in your cover letter, but don’t forget to add your greatest assets. Four skills that you should always mention in your cover letter are communication, time management, problem-solving, and teamwork. Highlighting these skills will demonstrate your valuable expertise that can help your desired employer succeed.
