This is the role that visibly holds the news show together—they verbally share and explain any pre-written or breaking news.

Public Speaking
Do you have a penchant for public speaking? Then the career of a news anchor might be a good one for you.
A news anchor’s job centers largely around public speaking, so someone in this role must be entirely comfortable with speaking in front of an audience. News anchors will be able to clearly and concisely deliver a variety of stories in a way that is engaging to their audience.
In addition to being able to report on pre-scripted stories, news anchors must have strong improvisational skills, as they will often receive breaking news that must be reported in the spur of the moment.
Written Communication
While verbal communication is important, it’s not the only skill a news anchor needs—written communication, too, is a very important skill for news anchors to have. When not on camera, news anchors may have the responsibility of researching stories and pitching them to the news directors.
They may also be responsible for writing the scripts that they will read on the air. Research and writing skills are absolutely essential for any of these tasks.
Reading a Teleprompter
Reading from a teleprompter is not a natural skill for most people, but it is an important one for news anchors to have. A news anchor may have written or received an amazing script with which to work, but that fantastic script will do them absolutely no good if they are unable to present it!
Anyone who is aspiring to be a news anchor should make sure to gain some experience working with teleprompters before committing to the career or seeking out positions. Learning to read from a teleprompter takes practice, but if you discover that you are unable to do it no matter how hard you try, that could be an impediment to you in a news anchor’s role, which relies so heavily upon this skill.
People Skills
Part of a news anchor’s job is interaction with people, both in the studio and outside of it. A news anchor often must interact with a co-host, reporter, or any other member of their team for the show to run successfully.
