Where you go to college may determine how many students have cars.

Fewer people are likely to have them in the city—where it isn’t necessary—while they are more common in rural and remote areas.

Make Friends

Start with the people in your dormitory. Hopefully, your roommate will have a car. If they don’t, you can work together to recruit a group of friends that includes someone with a vehicle.

Walk

As long as your legs work, you might as well use them. You’ll do plenty of walking around campus, and you can do the same outside of campus. Consider walking to the store, nearby restaurants, and other local attractions.

Get a Bike

A bike allows you to go a bit further than your feet. If you bike in town or a city, make sure you know the rules of the road.

Use Rideshare

Rideshares, like Lyft and Uber, are available in most cities for when you need to go to doctor’s appointments, interviews, events, and more. Split the price if you’re traveling with friends.

Get a Public Transportation Pass

Bigger cities have better public transportation. Still, most have at least a bus system. Learning the bus system in your college town may help you navigate your way to new sights and opportunities.

Try Other Local Transport

Especially towns surrounded by remote communities may offer local transportation options. In some neighborhoods, only the elderly and those with disabilities can use these services. However, these services are for anyone in some cases. Your school may even offer a shuttle service.

Hire a Chauffeur

A costly option is hiring a chauffeur since you’ll need someone to pay for it. One way to hire a chauffeur is to find a student on campus with a good driving record and ask them to help you run errands or go to appointments once or twice each week. Further, you may consider arranging something with a local service. Private companies may be a bit more expensive, but they are reliable and allow you to ride in comfort and style. This option may be ideal if you can afford it.

Getting a Car Without a License

If you’ve exhausted these options and think it would be easier to get your own vehicle to have on campus, you don’t need much to do it. You can buy a car and attain car insurance without a driver’s license. While you work on getting your permit and license, you’ll need a car to get yourself through life.

The best way to survive at college without a car is to make friends with someone who will help you get around. Making friends is the best way to enjoy your college experience. If your school is in a city, use public transportation and the sidewalks, as you can explore the world around you while getting where you need to go.
