Forensic Psychologists bring together human behavior and law to create one powerhouse career. 

Thanks to famous television programs, this field has become more popular.

However, before anyone jumps into this career, it would be good to know what it entails.

Education and Training

Currently, the United States does not require a license to be a forensic psychologist. Instead, it is a subdivision of applied psychology, and many have a Ph.D. or Psy.D. in clinical, social, counseling, organizational, school, or experimental psychology. 

Ideally, when it comes to training, it would be best if they also had a few years of postdoctoral experience.  It also helps gain experience to have a mentor and supervisor in forensic psychology.  

Main Tasks and Duties

Because forensic psychologists are a big part of the legal system and the psychological approach, they observe and interview people and their behavior, emotions, and possibly psychological problems or disorders.

In addition, they do a bit of psychological case analysis new york NY to aid in legal matters to get a good picture of the case.  In these case reports, they examine the criminal’s profile and their mental health status.  

Another duty would be showing up as an expert witness in a court case.  As a witness, they can use their knowledge to give their opinion on a person’s competency, give advice on sentencing and treatment, and if there is a future risk of criminal behavior.

Aside from being in a courtroom, forensic psychologists also provide counseling and treatment.  Most of the time, they counsel those who are victims of a crime or those convicted of a crime.

As far as careers in the psychology field, forensic psychology is an intense one.  It is a new subfield, but if one is fascinated by the law and human behavior, this job would be a great fit.
