  • Ah, the sweet freedom of having your own car on campus—nothing is better!

However, with great freedom comes great responsibility.

Keeping your vehicle in good shape can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially if your car is brand-new to you. No need to worry, though; we’re here to guide you through some of the most important car maintenance routines you should never skip. Trust us, your car will thank you later.

Keep an Eye on Your Fluids

One of the most important car maintenance tasks you can perform is checking your car’s fluids. You should closely monitor your motor oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. These fluids are the lifeblood of your vehicle and, if neglected, could lead to costly repairs or even a breakdown. Make sure you know the recommended intervals for checking and changing each fluid, as they can vary depending on your car’s make and model.

Don’t Ignore Your Belts and Hoses

You may not think about them often, but belts and hoses play a vital role in your car’s performance. Over time, they can wear down and crack, leading to coolant leaks, overheating, or eventually snapped belts. Periodically inspect your car’s belts and hoses and replace them if you notice any wear or damage. This simple maintenance routine can help prevent some seriously inconvenient surprises.

Stay on Top of Tire Checks

It goes without saying, but there’s a lot of riding on your tires, so a car maintenance routine you should never skip is tire checks. Focus on checking your tire pressure. Under- or over-inflation can impact your gas mileage and reduce traction, putting you at risk for an accident. Checking your tire pressure regularly and making adjustments as needed will help prevent these issues.

Don’t forget about tire rotation and alignments, either. These processes will help distribute wear evenly, extending the life of your tires. Tire rotations should happen every other time you get an oil change, but you need only perform alignments when needed. That doesn’t mean you should skip them, though. Proper tire alignment is crucial for many reasons, so failing to tackle this aspect of maintenance will ruin your car much faster.

    Check Pads and Rotors

Brakes are essential for your safety, so never take them for granted. Get into the habit of inspecting your brake pads and rotors at least once a year, and always note changes in your car’s braking performance. Replace brake pads when they wear down to a quarter-inch thickness, and you should switch out your rotors if they show signs of wear and tear. Never wait on these repairs since your life and the lives of those around you could depend on them.

Get a Move On With Your Filters

Finally, your car’s engine and cabin air filters may seem like minor components, but they play a big role in keeping your ride running smoothly (and keeping you breathing easier). Change your engine and cabin air filters according to the manufacturer’s recommended schedule. A clogged engine air filter can impact performance, while a dirty cabin filter can reduce the air quality in your car’s interior. Neither issue is ideal.
