When stepping onto a new campus, the world is your oyster.
There are endless possibilities between clubs and various activities you can do around the school.
But if you’re new to the community, putting yourself out there and meeting new people might be challenging.
One way to force yourself to put yourself out there is through sport. Knowing the best sports for making friends around the community is a good starting point for that mission.
Hit a Bullseye
If you have ever enjoyed watching a professional darts competition, you will fall in love with the atmosphere’s electricity. Having the announcer shout “180!” as the crowd erupts as if Oprah was giving them a free car is something that sticks with you.
While your local community may not share the same enthusiasm as Europeans about hitting three triple-20s, playing darts is a great way to make friends. There’s no shortage of places where you can play darts, and it’s common practice to see if you can challenge the winner or participate in the next game.
Darts tends to be one of the most sociable games, considering throwing three darts only takes about 15 seconds. You can spend every other second yucking it up with your new friends.
Find a Pickleball Court
Racquet sports are a good thing to get into for making new friends because there’s an abundance of them to choose from. People often lean toward tennis—court or table version—or racquetball as their go-to sport. Meanwhile, the newest craze that’s sweeping the nation is pickleball.
One of the many reasons pickleball is becoming so popular is how friendly it can be. You may be in the dark about how many people love this game, but a quick search of “pickleball near me” will have results regardless of where you live. After all, who would have thought Utah would be the state most interested in the game?
Tee It Up
Many consider golf a sport for seniors. While there are kernels of truth to that sentiment, that doesn’t mean you can’t spend a pleasant afternoon and make it a foursome on the links.
Even if you’re by your lonesome, your local course will most likely have you join a random group of two or three golfers. Once you overcome the awkwardness, you should have a good time, assuming you aren’t slowing them down. Plus, this allows you to meet all types of people and engage in new conversations since golf spans all age groups.

You may not want to be like Stingray from Cobra Kai and join a teenage karate class in college, but martial arts clubs are worth checking out. With the show’s soaring popularity, there may be a new interest in the art in your local community. If you are daring, you can dabble in mixed martial arts, although you might instantly regret that the second your instructor puts you in a rear-naked chokehold.
There is more to the sporting world than football, basketball, and baseball, as the best sports for making friends around the community illustrate. You can explore all these to see what suits you best. Hopefully, it leads to new lifelong acquaintances.
