  • The legal field is vast and varied.

There are actually many different areas of law in which to practice, and law schools reflect this by offering specialized programs.

Thanks to television lawyers, it’s easy to just think of lawyers as a one-size-fits all kind of deal. However, in reality there are a lot of options when it comes to practicing law.

If you are just beginning your undergrad and are thinking about law school, here are some different focuses you may want to consider.

    Intellectual Property Law

The importance of intellectual property law is only expected to grow in the coming years. More and more businesses are realizing the importance of protecting their intellectual property in a globalized and digitalized world. There are three major areas of intellectual property law, which include copyright law, patent law, and trademark law. Intellectual property lawyers help business owners, artists, and other creative professionals protect their work from theft and infringement.

    Drug and Alcohol Crimes Law

There are many areas of criminal law. Specializing in drug and alcohol crimes are one of the more unique branches of law you can go into. Future lawyers considering criminal law can choose between being a defense attorney, like Joe D Gonzales, or a prosecuting attorney.

This area of law is complex due to the changing nature of law. For example marijuana is becoming legal in a number of states for both medical and recreational usage, so throughout the country it creates interesting law circumstance. Students concerned about drug and alcohol crimes and people getting heavy sentences for minor offenses should consider this area of law.

    International Law

International law is a specialization to seriously consider as the world becomes more globalized. Pursuing additional education in international relations and foreign languages can help students prepare for an international law program. International law encompasses a number of topics, such as international business law, human rights law and international criminal law, to name a few. The web of international relations and treaties is a complex one and needs intelligent, dedicated legal professionals to navigate it.

    Health Law

The healthcare industry is currently experiencing growth that is expected to continue. This is due to both healthcare legislation and a large aging population. Students wishing to pursue a specialization in health law should take health-related science classes during their undergrad. This will help grow your understanding of the healthcare field and put you in a better position to both learn and practice healthcare law. Healthcare lawyers work with patients, hospitals, governments and insurance companies.

If you have a specific legal specialty in mind when beginning your undergrad, you can increase your chances of both getting into law school and doing well once you’re there by preparing in advance. This could consist of simply taking a few classes on the subject or obtaining a degree in it. Doing so will prove to law school admissions staff that you are knowledgeable about the field and serious in pursuing it.
