  • It’s no secret that you will attend a few parties during your four years in college—and there’s nothing wrong with that!

This is the best time to go out and have a blast while you figure out young adulthood.

Your first year of college will be full of temptation, partying, and key decisions that could set you up for the next three years.

Although partying is a part of American college culture, it’s essential that you stay safe and make smart decisions while attending these events. As the football season begins, here are the dos and don’ts of partying as a college student.

    Do: Stick With Your Friends

When you’re out with your friends, it’s important that you guys stick together and look out for one another. You don’t have to hold each other’s hands or be right next to them the entire night, but you should keep an eye on your friends.

Text each other throughout the night to check in and create a buddy system when it’s time to leave.

    Do: Know Your Limits

Don’t be “that person,” and know your limits. We don’t encourage underage drinking, and it’s especially important that you don’t overdo it and are aware of your limitations.

Be observant of your body and surroundings. Also, don’t let anyone pressure you to do anything you don’t want to do. You know yourself better than anyone else!

    Quick Tip

Drinking heavily before bed can cause snoring. Save yourself an awkward talk with your roommate by limiting yourself.

    Do: Eat Before Heading Out

You must eat a hardy breakfast, lunch, and dinner if you plan to go out. You need something solid in your stomach to help slow down the absorption of alcohol in your bloodstream.

It’s not safe or healthy to drink on an empty stomach because you can face dehydration and vomiting. Don’t be “that person,” and eat before you drink.

    Don’t: Drink and Drive

We know you’ve probably sat through a million assemblies about drinking and driving, but it’s serious. Driving after you’ve been drinking is deadly and illegal; unfortunately, it happens way too often not to talk about it.

Before you and your friends head out, you all need to determine who will be the designated driver or if you all want to pitch in for an Uber or Lyft.

Don’t: Leave With People You Don’t Know

As stated before, you should stick with your friends and create a buddy system if someone wants to leave earlier than others. You or your friends should NEVER leave the party with someone they don’t know. It may be tempting to go with the cute person you’ve been flirting with all night, but you should resist that temptation.

Having fun and partying at college parties is a rite of passage—almost everyone does it, even your parents probably did. However, it’s important that you stay safe while you’re partying so that you can tell the story later! Use these dos and don’ts of partying as a college student to have a great time while staying safe and sound.
