  • You’ve heard it dozens of times before, perhaps in an exasperated tone: adulting is hard.

Sure, it’s a challenge, but it’s not an insurmountable one.

In fact, when you’ve got a starter list in front of you, the process gets simpler.

Ease your brain into the adulting journey by making a few changes at a time. Get used to looking out for yourself a little more, and remember that the other adults in your life are rooting for you. Check out these top adulting tips for the first-time adult, take a deep breath, and don’t sweat it.

    Keep Your Own Calendar

When you were younger, your parent or guardian probably made your appointments for you. Once you hit 18, take control of your calendar and make those appointments for yourself.

In addition, once you’re an adult, you’ll have to say goodbye to your pediatrician and start seeing a grown-up doctor. Choose that doctor yourself and ask them plenty of questions to ensure they’re a good fit.

Now, it’s up to you to keep up with those appointments; as you learn to budget your time, you’ll find the best days and times to see doctors and other professionals.

    Learn Essential Skills

Once you enter the grown-up world, there are dozens of practices that people call “common sense.” But here’s the thing: common sense doesn’t exist. Everyone has to learn how to do laundry properly.

There’s a learning curve to cooking eggs. We’re not born knowing how to change a tire. If any basic life skills have you stumped, don’t be afraid to ask another adult for help.

Cooking and cleaning are two basic survival skills you’ll have to prioritize. Learn how to prepare staples like eggs, rice, and beans; you’ll be surprised at how versatile they are.

Once you move into your first apartment, get your hands on a vacuum and mop and learn how to use them. Remember your calendar? Schedule regular cleaning days to avoid entropy taking over.

    Create a Budget

Once you settle into a job and start receiving regular paychecks, plan out where all that money will go. Give yourself a small allowance for fun stuff every month, but rent and bills should be at the top of your priority list. Missing payments won’t look great on your credit history.

Speaking of credit, if you haven’t already got a credit card, sign up for a basic one with a low credit limit. Put a few basic expenses on the card, then pay off the balance right away.

Accruing debt and paying it off promptly is how you develop a high credit score, which will help you immensely if you want to take out loans in the future.

As you tackle adulthood head-on, don’t get overwhelmed. Take the process one step at a time and remember these adulting tips for the first-time adult next time you do the dishes or pay your rent!
