Well, we can ease some of your worries and answer that first one for you right now. Most dorm rooms come with a bed, dresser, desk, and maybe a desk chair for each occupant. That’s about all you can expect. You’ll need to provide the rest.
No need to fear, though. We’ve made a list of the best types of furniture for a college dorm room. Some pieces will definitely be way more valuable to you and your future roommate than others, so we wanted to give you some insights on what they are.
Desk Chair
We’re aware that we said your dorm room would most likely come with a desk chair, but there’s a really good chance that it will be cheap and uncomfortable. Our number one suggestion is to go all-in on a high-quality desk chair.
Sure, it might cost a couple of hundred dollars, but the value is so worth it. You get a comfy place to work on your homework. Plus, since it’s so mobile, you can easily push it in front of the TV when it’s time to relax.
Plus, if the school has already provided you with a chair, that just means you now have an extra seat for your friends when they come over.
Butterfly or Moon Chairs
If you’d rather have one chair dedicated to your desk and another for relaxation, butterfly and moon chairs are both great additions to any dorm room. They can be unexpectedly comfortable, and you can fold them up and tuck them away when you don’t need them, giving you more room for activities.
Futon
These types of couches are the go-to for dorm rooms because they’re so versatile. If you’re able to return your school-issued bed to administration, you can save tons of room by making a futon double as your bed at night.
Of course, one of the biggest deterrents to this strategy is that many futons aren’t that comfortable. However, there are plenty of ways to modify them to make them better for sleeping on. But even if you don’t use them for sleeping, they are still a great budget- and space-saving option for dorms.
TV Stand
Most people wouldn’t consider a TV stand as one of the best types of furniture for a college dorm room since they are so large, but they can also be incredibly adaptable, depending on your situation.
Not only will it hold your TV, but many TV stands have drawers or cabinets you can use for extra clothes that don’t fit in your dresser or other storage needs.
Also, if you and your roommate position your beds just right, you could fit the TV stand right in between them, so you can both use it as a nightstand. Both of these functions will save you from having to buy extra furniture that would take up even more space in your already cramped dorm.
