  • So you’ve completed your college search, submitted your applications, and you’ve been accepted. Congratulations!

Now you need to figure out how to cover all of the costs.

With the average cost of tuition and fees running between $9,716 and $35,676 per year, it’s no wonder that so many students and parents find themselves wondering how to get money for college.

If your semester is looming and you need cash fast, you’ve got plenty of options. Here are five simple and easy ideas to help you get started.

    1. Clean Out Your Closet

When you head off to college, you won’t be able to take all of your stuff with you. Dorm rooms are tiny, and there’s no reason to leave extra clothes, sports equipment, and other items at your parents’ house. Instead, use this opportunity to pick up some quick cash by cleaning out your closet and selling things you’ll no longer need.

You can do this by having a yard sale, listing items on sites like Craigslist and eBay, or visiting specialty sites like ThredUP or Poshmark.

    2. Sell Your Gift Cards for Cash

While you’re cleaning up your room, gather up all of those gift cards you never got around to using. There are many websites that will pay you cash in exchange for your cards. Do your research and make sure you find the best deal before you dive in.

    3. Apply for Scholarships

You might think it’s too late to apply for scholarships, but you would be surprised. Check out scholarship websites and look for additional opportunities.

Some organizations specifically offer late-deadline scholarships, and they might not even require you to write an essay!

    4. Take Out a Personal Loan

If your credit is decent, you might want to consider taking out a personal loan to cover those last-minute expenses. The best thing about this option is that it doesn’t take much time.

Some products, like LoanExpress, allow you to apply online and give you an answer in about 10 minutes. This is a great way to get your financial worries taken care of so you can focus on getting ready to start your college career.

    5. Pick Up Work Online

If the idea of a part-time job doesn’t excite you, consider picking up some work online. Depending on the skills you have, you can often find work doing freelance writing or tutoring. Otherwise, there are sites that will pay you to take surveys online or even just to search the web.
