What becomes of police officers once they retire?
You might be wondering what else is out there after a long service in the force or if a young officer decides to head off in a different direction.
A private security job may have appealed to you as an ideal career.
If you have always dreamed of a career in defence and protection, though not in the armed forces, you might want to read on. What is expected of you as a private security guard?
As the name suggests, guards are basically on guard duty. There is always need for good security guards to provide protection to facilities, institutions, and individuals. You are mandated to use your training and instincts to ensure that your charges are safe; your area of jurisdiction is secure.
Security means other than police action
You do not take up the duties of a police officer, your dashing gear and no-nonsensedemeanour notwithstanding. You are not going to clap the cuffs on the bad guy and read him his Miranda rights. The biggest thrill you are likely to have with Sir Thug is to hold him in a secure area for law enforcement to come and take charge of him.
That is if a crime has been committed. Where there’s no crime, use your discretion. You are allowed to apply acceptable levels of force in dealing with potential threats to property under your jurisdiction. You can put out suspected thieves and trespassers if there is a need to.
What of remuneration?
How much you make as a private security guard is dependent on the type of security you are employed to offer. There are varieties of security:
- Personal protection
- Corporate security
- Private homes security
- Organizations and institutions
A guard employed to protect an individual is likely to make quite a bit more than one who protects sites and buildings. Corporate guards may even enjoy additional benefits like paid vacations and insurance.
How to qualify for private security jobs? You may not believe this, but you are probably qualified as you are. For general security gigs, you do not need a degree or diploma. If you are 18 years and over and are physically fit for the physical demands of the job, then you are good to go.
Experience is however demanded for personal and corporate security jobs. You may be required to have worked for a few years in a similar position, say, law enforcement.
Do you wonder what makes this career lucrative? Consider that it gives you an opportunity to serve others by offering protection. There is the thrill of deterring the less than palatable elements of society from carrying out their nefarious activities.
It is yet another level of enforcing law and order for a police officer who is retired or considering a different lineinthe same profession. This job also allows you to get relevant experience and build a portfoliofor entry into defence or law and enforcement jobs.
