  • You learn a lot when you go to college.

From your classes to the people you meet to the next few years of growing up, you’re going to leave college not just smarter, but wiser as well.

Unfortunately, a lot of college lessons tend to come from mistakes students make. Steer away from these blunders with our list of biggest things to avoid in college.

    Not Talking to Your Professors

Meeting a new professor can be intimidating, especially if they’re important to your major. Many students—especially in their first year or two—make the mistake of not talking to their professors. Get to know your professors and your department head. Never be afraid to ask questions or stop by during office hours. Even if your professor is busy, they’ll notice the effort. Building a relationship with your professors makes it easier to ask questions, get help, and make the most out of your courses.

    Partying Too Much

Partying is the quintessential college experience—and there’s nothing wrong with that. You can make a lot of great memories during parties with friends or a night out on the town. However, one of the biggest things to avoid in college is partying carelessly.

Follow both the laws of your state and the rules of your college every time you drink. Careless or dangerous decisions such as driving drunk can lead to consequences that will follow you forever.

    Procrastinating

It can be tempting to put off studying for a test or writing that essay, especially when you have classes that only meet a couple times a week. However, the semester just gets harder as it goes. The more work you put off now, the more you’ll regret it in the long run.

Strive to get your work done promptly. Make a plan for tests and bigger projects so you don’t have to pull an all-nighter to get it done last minute.

    Skipping Class

College comes with a lot of responsibility, including dragging yourself to class every day. Just like procrastinating, skipping class is extremely tempting after a late night or at the end of a long week. Just remember that you’re paying for all your classes. Not going is a waste of money, plain and simple. Your professor will also notice when you do and don’t show up, and being there every day is a good way to get them to know (and like) you better.

    other valuable tips:

    Not Studying

Many of your classes will be harder in college, so it’s important to practice good study habits throughout the entire semester. Don’t skip out on those group study sessions, even if there are a dozen things you’d rather do.

If you’re struggling, try a few different methods—such as group studying, re-reading chapters, or making flashcards—until you find the one that works for you. Studying regularly can improve your performance in class. If you study well for every exam and quiz throughout the semester, you’ll be far better prepared when the final comes around.
