  • For lots of college students, the move from home to school is a group effort, one they make with their parents or relatives.

However, for a myriad of reasons, many college students find themselves having to make the move solo.

Just because you’re on your own, doesn’t mean that moving to college solo isn’t doable. Here are some tips on making the move to college less stressful and more manageable for one.

    Decide What You Can Bring

If you’re driving on your own, you may be limited in what you can feasibly transport and carry by yourself. It’s very possible to bring small furniture items, but larger items like futons and beds might not be possible. Packing items like clothes, toiletries, and books in suitcases can make transporting them a lot easier.

Know What Your School Will Be Furnishing

While you might not be able to transport your own bed, desk or sofa, the good news is, you might not need to in the first place. Most dormitories provide students with these essential basic furniture pieces. Contact your housing administration and get a list of what they will be providing. Be sure to see what the dorm already has so you don’t end up bringing double there as well.

Find Cheap Options for The Things You Still Need

If you find yourself unable to transport some items that the school won’t be furnishing, look for inexpensive ways to obtain them once you arrive at your college. Many basic items can be purchased cheaply at big box or secondhand stores. Just because you can’t transport something doesn’t mean that you can’t find it cheaply once you arrive.

    Be Prepared for The Drive

Driving a long distance on your own can be intimidating. This is especially true if you have a car that’s packed to the brim with the items you’ll need for college. Be prepared for the drive before you hit the road. You should have important numbers written down on a slip of paper, such as the number of a roadside assistance service or a good car accident lawyers, just in case the worst was to happen. Bring a paper map in case your phone becomes inoperable, and plan ahead for which rest stops or hotels you would like to stop at on the drive.

It can be a bit difficult to move to college on your own, but it is completely achievable if you plan ahead. If you follow these tips, the move will be a piece of cake.
