You’re out of high school and ready to head off to college.
Moving into a new dorm is exciting, but it’s essential to know the most important tips for packing for your first day of college.
Having an idea of what to bring and how to pack it ensures that the experience goes smoothly.
Figuring Out What Not To Bring
You’ll save a lot of time and worry by figuring out what items you won’t need to bring with you. Does your dorm room have a television? Are they already set up with a stable internet connection, or will you need to bring your own router? Is there a microwave in the kitchen, or does your school have a ban on electric grills?
Before worrying about what to bring, figure out what the school already provides to get a rough idea of the essentials.
The Bare Necessities
There are some things you obviously want to pack for your first day of college. Bring enough clothes to last you a couple of weeks and have some toiletries on hand to avoid shopping as soon as you arrive.
You don’t need to pack three different swimsuits and your complete collection of decorative socks, but make sure you have some business casual clothes for important events. Also, remember to pack for the season. A swimsuit is excellent in the summer, but you want to have a heavier coat in the winter.
Since most college dorms have internet access, bring any and all electronic devices to aid with your schoolwork. Having a laptop set up in your dorm will keep you from spending a lot of late nights in the school library.
Packing Everything Up
OK, so now you know what to pack and what to leave behind, let’s look at the best way to pack everything. You want to find sturdy cardboard boxes that can collapse once you unpack everything. Ensure you select quality packing tape to prevent mishaps while traveling.
If space isn’t an issue, having your belongings in plastic storage tubs is another option. Many dorms have raised beds to accommodate storage containers such as those.
Go Shopping Later
Some students try to pack every little thing they might need from the very beginning. Yes, it would be best to have a few rolls of toilet paper and a can opener, but you can leave the canned goods at home.
Most dormitories are close to a grocery store or mini-mart where you can buy provisions. Grabbing a bottle of dish soap once you’re there is better than trying to pack one on your first trip.
Getting ready for college can be challenging, but it’s more manageable with the correct information. Following these tips will make the whole experience a smooth one. Just remember to pack light, pack smart, and pick up some extra stuff once you’re there.
