  • Come on, you can’t work all the time. Americans are known for their workaholic tendencies, so every once in a while it’s important to remember to take a vacation and make time for yourself. With mounting pressures to get ahead in the workforce, it’s easy to understand why people are working so much. It’s not just employees who need a break, though; university students need short vacations too. There are plenty of excuses students often cite, but the reality is that indulging in a small getaway is probably easier than you think. So, why should you take a break, and how can you?

    Social interaction

You might be thinkingthat you already interact lots with your fellow classmates on campus, and you are probably right; but consider the benefits to interacting with them in different ways. Traveling together often brings people closer together in ways they never thought possible. Doing new activities, meeting new people, and problem solving when you hit the inevitable bump in the road, are all great ways to strengthen bonds with your peers. Many universities organize activities like ski trips to foster these very situations. Students come away with new friends, and hopefully they learned a thing or two as well. You can even travel alone and meet new people along the way. Youth hostels are great social hot spots where like-minded travelers are eager to make new friends from all over the world. Or, for the adventurous and ultra-budget conscious traveler, check out the social networking/travel network Couchsurfing.com. There, you can meet peer-reviewed people willing to let you sleep on their couch!

    Relaxing

Chances are you have been hard at work throughout the semester, and when finals are finally over, it’s definitely time to relax. Why not think about traveling to a new place and seeing what it has to offer? You have to release your stress somehow, and a new city can be the perfect place to escape the mundane worries of your day-to-day life. Some people might de-stress by lying on the beach, others might do so by camping or fishing along a stream. Whatever your pleasure may be, get away! Think about what you love to do, and then think about a new place to do it.

    Where to go

Where you go is entirely dependent on what type of person you are, but you should consider a few things when making your decision. First, think about what you want to do and what type of people you want to encounter. Certain times of the year can be especially good for meeting other students, for example, spring break at Panama City Beach, Florida; but maybe that’s not what you are looking for. Either way, once you have arrived at a decision on what type of vacation you want to take, it’s time to start planning. Good destinations offer more than one type of activity, so do your research. For example, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is a great city for history buffs, but did you know that it also is a great sports city? If you love the National Football League, you might be able to check out an Eagles game after looking at the Liberty Bell. If baseball is more your thing, and you want to see the Phillies make a run for another World Series,Citizens Bank Park Tickets are only a click away.

    Domestic travel

Many students are discouraged by budgetary constraints when planning a vacation. Remember though, you don’t have to go to Europe or Asia to have a great time. In fact, many people might enjoy traveling through their own country even more. First, traveling domestically can be significantly cheaper for students. Getting to your destination might be as simple as hopping on a bus or a train, or, if you do choose to fly, domestic tickets are cheaper than international flights. Traveling around America does not have to be boring and familiar, either. For example, Roswell, New Mexico could be a fun and strange break to take – who knows what you might see there? Or, if strange isn’t really what you are looking for, consider the diverse array of activities available across the country. You could go hiking in the Rockies, scuba diving in the Florida Keys, bobsledding at the Olympic Village in Lake Placid, or learn to surf in California. Whatever part of the country you are in, there is surely something exciting to see and do.
