The need for people who are highly skilled in mathematics is rising all the time as increasing numbers of technical jobs open.
This need is expected to rise further in the next decade or two as more jobs are open than there are people to fill them.
However, those who love mathematics may wonder what types of jobs are available to them.
They may immediately think of a high school math teacher, which is a very low-paying job. However, there are numerous other math-related jobs that are very fulfilling and that pay quite well for a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Consider the four jobs below that can be found across the country and that require a head for numbers.
A degree in statistics will set an individual up for a job in the public or private sector, which could include anything from the government to a university. With statistics, an individual will study data, including trends, and will form tables and graphs to interpret the numbers correctly.
Individuals must have a firm grasp of logic and reasoning and must be able to analyze data quickly while forming interpretations in their minds. Problem-solving skills are vital. Statisticians can make around $70,000 annually after several years of practice and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for statisticians to increase by 14% by 2020.
Most people are familiar with accountants if they take their taxes to them. However, accountants do much more than personal taxes. They also provide financial planning to individuals and businesses, perform audits, complete business taxes and maintain financial accounts and records.
Those interested in accounting should have good analytical and organizational skills. While accounting is a somewhat more stressful job than statistics is, the need for accountants is expected to rise by the same degree by 2020. Accountants can work everywhere from their private offices to major corporations. Accountants make approximately $52,000 per year on average.
While the need for economists is expected to drop slightly in the next few years, this is still a stable career path that is good for those who like to learn about managing wealth and debt by looking at history. An online economics degree will prepare individuals for graduate school or for careers in businesses across the country.
The well-trained economist will be able to analyze world economies to provide estimates regarding inflation, interest rates and other economic points that can affect an entire country. Economists can expect to earn more than a statistician does at approximately $90,000 per year.
There are numerous fields within engineering, including branches in mechanical, electrical, chemical and civil engineering. All types of engineering, however, require a solid knowledge of mathematics, particularly calculus and trigonometry. The need for civil engineers is perhaps the most dramatic in the United States currently with projected job growth of nearly 20% from 2012 to 2022.
Depending on the field, engineers can do everything from building bridges and designing electrical systems to designing sewer systems and producing fuel. Starting salaries for most engineers are over $50,000 with median salaries around $80,000.
There are dozens of other jobs that require mathematics knowledge, including everything from meteorology and astronomy to computer science and data analysis. Those who are still in college for mathematics may want to visit with their guidance counselors to see if there is a test they can take to determine which job could be right for them based on their skills and interests. Whether one prefers imaginary numbers or practical mathematics, a quality degree based in mathematics will get one far down a career path.
