  • Since (almost!) everybody has a set of teeth, dental hygiene is an excellent choice of career since you can be assured that your services are always going to be required.

Today, more and more people are going to see their dental hygienist, since these professionals can do a much better job of leaving their pearly whites gleaming and squeaky clean.

So, you’ve decided that helping people look after their mouth is the job for you. But, how do you get there? Let’s find out.

    #1. Education

It’s going to be hard to get a job as a hygienist in a dentist’s office if you’ve never had any relevant education or experience. But, don’t worry – there’s no need to study for a lengthy college degree to achieve your career goals. In fact, this dental hygiene school offers courses that teach you everything you need to know about the job; you’ll be qualified to work as a hygienist in just eighteen months’ time.

    #2. Experience

Since working as a dental hygienist is very hands-on, you’ll need to have some experience behind you before you can be ready to start working with your own patients. In general, this is best gotten when you are a student – perhaps your school has a clinic where you can practice, or maybe they have a good relationship with a local dental office where you’ll be able to find an internship or voluntary work. Aim to get as much experience as you can; this will help you stand out from other applicants when it comes to getting your first full-time position.

    #3. On the Job Training

If you want to work as a dental hygienist then you’ll need to be ready to commit to lots of on-the-job training before you are fully qualified to be left with your own patients. It’s a good idea to select a course or learning program that focuses mainly on practical training, since whilst theory is great and very important to learn, the more on-the-job experience that you’ve had, the better. Once you have graduated, you may need to undergo further hands-on training with your employer to make sure that you’re up to scratch.

    #4. Further Career Options

So, you’ve finally qualified, but you’re already thinking about options for progression in the future! That’s great, since there are many roles that are suitable for hygienists to progress to in the dental industry. For example, in the coming years, you might find yourself working as a practice manager, teaching new dental hygiene students yourself, or even working as an orthodontic therapist.

In some cases, highly experienced hygienists can undergo extra training to take on tasks usually carried out by a dentist such as tooth whitening or sedation preparation. You can also choose between working at a dentist’s office or becoming self-employed and starting your own dental business.

A job in dental hygiene has many benefits – high demand, sociable working hours, the chance to be self-employed and great opportunities for further training and career progression.
