  • When you’re in college, you’re hopefully getting an education that will lead to a rewarding and lucrative career.

However, even if there is a lot of money in your future, you should save money whenever you can during these years.

That might sound like a good idea in general, but there are specific reasons to save money during this time.

    A Semester Off

The further you get into college, the higher the level of courses you will take. You might have one or more semesters that get particularly challenging and require more of you than the rest.

If you have enough money saved, then you can possibly focus totally on your studies that semester without having to work any part-time jobs you have been relying on for money during your college years to date so far. Having a semester off of work can help you focus and do your best work.

    Starting Adulthood Expenses

Once you finish college, you’ll be on your own as an adult, and that carries a price tag with it. You might need to put down deposits for your utilities and any home you rent.

You’ll also need work clothes and possibly even a car to get around. So prepare now for these expenses, you’ll thank yourself later.

    The Ring

Many people who go to college meet someone there that they fall in love with. Romance leads to seriously considering a life together, and then it’s time to propose.

If you have money saved up, then you can aim a little higher than mass-produced shopping store jewelry and instead look into unique handmade wedding rings. For someone who is truly unique and special to you, they deserve to have something just as distinct put on their finger.

    Spontaneous Opportunities

Many colleges and universities have a rigid structure to them, from campus rules to regular class schedules. Social activities might be quite the opposite, however.

Having money saved up means you can take advantage of sudden opportunities that come up with friends and fellow students, be it road trips, spring break ideas, or just midnight pizza and bowling. Save now so that when the occasion arrives you are ready.

    Independence

Perhaps the biggest reason of all to save your money while in college is just to start weening yourself off of your parents. Whether they send you spending money regularly or just help chip in with tuition, room, board, and books, you’ll eventually be on your own entirely.

When you save up your own money for emergencies and expenses, then you won’t have to rely on your family or others as often for help.

    Emergencies

Life is difficult. It is hard to predict and usually expensive. Things can, and likely will, go wrong. Having a safety cushion will be very helpful.

From car accidents to hospital visits, it is a good idea to have money ready in case the worst happens. You won’t regret having the money ready if something happens. Not the most fun thing to save for, but it may be the most important.

So that’s six reasons why you should start saving now. While saving in college is very hard, it is equally as important. A good rule of thumb when trying to save is to save 10%.

Some adjustments may be necessary to make that 10% goal, but having financial stability is worth it. Having a goal in mind can really help on those occasions when you want to spend instead of saving.

Make goals for yourself and stick to them. Start saving now and you will thank yourself in the future.
