Exams can be especially stressful, the same goes for studying for them.
Feeling distracted or ineffective while you study only increases your stress.
Luckily, there are several things you can do to stay focused when preparing for exams.
Below are a few tricks that can be used individually or together to make the most of your exam study sessions.
Create a Plan for Your Study Sessions
Whether you’re studying for a single exam or several, create a plan for your study session. In this plan, take note of:
- What materials you need (books, writing tools, paper, a laptop, etc.)
- What you need to study (subjects, topics, chapters, pages, etc.)
- The order in which you’ll study different subjects or topics
- How long you plan to study
- Where you’ll study
By creating a detailed plan, you’ll be able to assess your progress as you go. This will help you see that if you’ve accomplished half of your plan by halfway through the time you allotted, you’re on track. Or that you need to pick up the pace if you’re behind.
Use Caffeine to Stay Awake
Caffeine is a known to be a classic pick-me-up for many students. Drinking coffee is an effective study technique, but to make the most of the coffee you drink, make sure to keep your schedule in mind.
K cups are a great alternative to a full pot of coffee. You can simply brew a K cup when you’re in need of some caffeine. No need to worry about a wasted pot of coffee or having too much caffeine when you’re ready to go to sleep after studying.
Adjust the Temperature of Your Study Environment
If it’s too cold or too warm, you won’t be able to study well. A Cornell University study found that when they raised the temperature in an office from 68 to 72 degrees, typing errors fell from 25% to 10% and employees went from working just 54% of the time to 100%. The ideal temperature for good focus and fewer errors is between 70-78 degrees.
Fit in Some Fitness
Exercise gets your blood pumping. And the more blood you have pumping through your body – and as a result, your brain – the more focused you’ll be. Take a brisk walk before your study session.

Take a few breaks during your study session to take a short walk, do some yoga stretches, or do a few push-ups or sit-ups. This can be especially effective if you’re feeling yourself starting to feel sleepy.
As you study, remember to focus on learning rather than scoring a specific grade. If you can remain fully focused more often than not, you’ll learn more effectively. And that leads to better grades naturally.
