  • Jobs can have an effect on employee health, both positively and negatively.

Some careers are more likely to cause physical stress or present risks to our overall wellbeing.

This blog post will be focusing on five careers that present cancer risks.

    Firefighter

Firefighters are exposed to hazardous chemicals, smoke and various toxins which can all lead to breathing problems and other long-term health effects including cancer.

The risk of developing cancer is further increased for firefighters who work with asbestos insulation or vintage firefighting gear as these materials contain carcinogenic properties.

In some cases, compensation may be allotted due to occupational disease. Contact experienced personal injury lawyers, like Jeeves Law Group, P.A., to gain deeper insight into your case.

    Construction Worker

Exposure to hazardous substances such as asbestos, radiation, and other toxins found in construction materials increases the risk of lung cancer for construction workers.

Additionally, working in cramped spaces or at heights can increase your chances of slipping or falling, which can result in serious injury or even death.

    Painter

Painters use a variety of paints, primers, coatings and solvents which can contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are known carcinogens when inhaled over prolonged periods of time.

VOCs are released into the air during painting projects, so it’s important for painters to wear protective gear such as respirators and gloves when working with these materials.

    Hairdresser

Hairdressers may be exposed to a variety of chemicals used in hair care products such as dyes, bleaches, and permanent wave solutions which contain some level of formaldehyde which has been linked to an increased risk of leukemia and lymphoma cancers.

As with painters, it’s important for hairdressers to wear protective gear when handling these chemicals as they are highly toxic when inhaled over time.

    Automobile Mechanic

Working with auto parts containing asbestos components increases the risk of mesothelioma cancer due to inhalation of airborne particles containing asbestos fibers over time while working on automobiles or other vehicles containing brake pads, gaskets and exhaust systems made from asbestos components prior to 1980’s regulations banning the use of asbestos in cars.

In conclusion, there is a certain amount of risk associated with many jobs across all industries but especially those requiring exposure to hazardous substances or environments such as firefighting, construction work, painting, hairdressing, and automobile mechanics.

Knowing what potential dangers exist is the first step towards protecting yourself from harm, so if you’re considering any one of these careers make sure you take all necessary safety precautions before beginning your job search.

Taking the proper steps now could mean a healthier future later on down the line.
