  • College is hectic. You are required to study hard and lay the foundation for your adult life.

It is also exciting, what with all the parties and emerging issues.

It can all be so overwhelming that you forget to take care of your health.

Your health and wellbeing are your life’s biggest priorities, and nothing should compromise either. The following tips will help you observe healthy living in college.

    1. Eat a Balanced Diet

Many college students eat nothing but snacks and fast foods, and most don’t care enough to keep track of what they eat. Snacks and fast foods may be cheap and easy to come by, but they pose serious long term health risks. Your body requires nutritious and healthy foods and beverages for optimal performance and healthy growth.

Observing a balanced diet can be easy, even with the rush of college life. Nutritionists recommend setting a meal schedule inclusive of whole foods and generally healthy foods.

Healthy beverages are also just as important as healthy foods. It is particularly important to stay hydrated – make sure that your drinking water is clean and inquire whether a water filter pitcher is the best way to filter well water in your building. Some dorms will have filtered water, while others may not. It is a good idea to make sure that your water is filtered if possible.

    2. Exercise Regularly

The known health benefits of exercising are numerous and impressive. In fact, exercising is one of the few sure ways to prolong one’s natural lifespan.

You are in your prime, so exercising should not be a problem (unless there is a reasonable excuse holding you back).

Exercising is versatile, and you have a wide range of options when it comes to exercising techniques and routines.

Fitness experts starting with simple exercising routines and upgrading to more intense ones as your body adapts and becomes accustomed to the activity.

You can practice simple exercises to do in your room or go the popular way and start a jogging routine.

Tip: Exercising is also healthy for the brain. It triggers the production of hormones that stimulate the brain and increase its learning capacity as a result.

    3. Observe Proper Hygiene

College students have often been accused of letting themselves go. Unfortunately, there is some truth to this accusation. It is easy to ignore chores and personal hygiene when there is no one to supervise you. This is sad, especially considering that poor hygiene is a well-known health risk.

You don’t need anyone to supervise your personal hygiene. Take a bath regularly, brush your teeth twice a day, wear clean clothes, make your bed, vacuum your room, and do everything necessary to stay clean in every aspect. Good hygiene will make you less susceptible to infectious diseases and help boost your immune system.

    4. Limit the Partying

Endless partying is one of the main highlights of college life. It is fun – some people even consider it a rite of passage – and makes for memorable experiences. However, it can also pose many health and personal safety risks – there are many cases of college students who end up hurt (or dead) “partying like it’s the 80’s.”

The negative health effects of excessive drinking and smoking (not to mention doing drugs) are common knowledge. Excessive drinking will impair your judgment, make your actions reckless, and expose you to danger – it will also damage your liver and other vital organs. Smoking will also expose you to a range of chronic conditions, including lung cancer and heart disease.

Partying is fun, but you shouldn’t overdo it. Drink moderately, if you must, and avoid smoking and doing drugs. Additionally, avoid getting into dangerous challenges in the heat of the moment – always keep your wits about you.

    5. Socialize and Make Friends

College life can be depressing if you have no one to confide in, and mental health is an integral part of your overall health. Humans are social beings, so get out there and socialize – you will find people from all walks of life in college, and some of them will make a perfect match.

Be careful when choosing your friends as they will greatly influence your college life – make friends with mature people who have something positive to offer.

    Lay a Strong Foundation

College life is one of the most important phases in life. It is the ideal time to pick a patch and lay a foundation for the rest of your life. As such, be prudent and make wise decisions for your health and overall well-being.
