The adjustment from high school to college is definitely a unique one.
You now have full responsibility over your life and can make choices for yourself as an adult.
While this new-found freedom may seem really exciting, it can also be very overwhelming for someone who’s not used to making their own choices.
Your successes and failures are now up to you and the choices you make. If you find yourself in a position where you’re struggling to get organized, there are a few ways to combat this and be successful in college.
1. Get a planner.
Having a weekly planner is such a beneficial way to stay on top of things. When teachers want you to remember an important concept in school, they encourage you to take lots of notes and write things down. When it’s written down, you don’t have to worry about forgetting something. Make this a tradition that you live by on a daily basis. Make it fun by purchasing bright colored pens or markers to make note of things. This will definitely help you in a very immediate way.
2. Use the calendar app on the phone.
Most college students stay on top of their electronics and have a smartphone. Whether you own a smartphone or not, most phones normally come with a calendar application. If you’re more into technology, write down your important events in your phone’s calendar.
Set reminders through the calendar app and trigger an alarm to go off as something important is approaching. So often, people assume an alarm is only good for waking you out of your sleep at night. Truthfully, an alarm is just a great way to alert you that something is coming up soon and you need to be aware.
3. Clean and declutter.
It’s really hard to focus when you live in a space that’s dirty and cluttered. If you have a messy roommate, you can do your best to have a serious conversation about maintaining a certain level of cleanliness. Furthermore, it’s good for you to stay on top of cleaning. Try to do a little bit of cleaning every day. A little routine maintenance can truly go a long way.
It’s also very wise to declutter and get rid of a lot of things you just don’t need. Throw away old papers and garbage. Try not to get into the habit of creating junk piles all over your room. Your mind takes inventory of your surroundings and will feel cluttered as well.
4. Organize by season.
After you’ve decluttered, you might find that you have so many things you need to keep but don’t have room for. For women, this may include your wardrobe. When you’re in this type of situation, it’s a good idea to organize based on the season. Rent a storage unit and store the clothes that are out of season.
If it’s wintertime, you can pack up all of the sandals, beach towels and warm-weather clothing and place them in storage bins. Label these bins properly and then organize them in self storage in Louisiana for the winter. Sure, it’ll cost you a small fee, but it’s worth your mental clarity.
5. Wake up early.
There’s a saying made popular by Benjamin Franklin: "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." Waking up in the morning will keep you organized because you’ll be able to get a head-start on your day and stay centered.
Even if you get out of bed, brew some coffee and just stare at your planner for the first twenty minutes, you’ll have a great understanding of the things you need to do. It’s also helpful because you’ll be able to set the tone for your day and get started on a calm and peaceful note.
