  • If you are a college student, then you know that going to college is expensive. There is tuition and fees to pay and meals and textbooks to buy. However, there are some unique ways to save money this year in college.

    Rent Your Textbooks

Going to buy textbooks at the bookstore for the first time can be an eye opening experience for any freshman. Textbooks are expensive, but you must have them to pass your courses. Instead of buying them, try renting them instead. You will save a lot of money each semester. You probably won’t need the textbooks after the semester is over anyway.

    Rent a Small Place

If you are like many college students, you probably took many things with you when you left home and went to college. You might think that you need to rent a large apartment to house all of your stuff, but there is a better way. Consider renting a small space, a studio or a room for a cheap amount each month. Then, you can store your belongings in a storage unit that alarms each unit, so your items are safe.

    Take Part in Campus Activities

Many college students spend a lot of money each month on entertainment expenses. Instead of paying to attend expensive concerts or to go to clubs each week, try taking part in campus activities that are free. Most colleges offer all kinds of activities like sporting events, concerts, performances, carnivals and more to give students a chance to relax and enjoy their free time. If you do want to attend an event off campus, check to see if there are student discounts available. Many venues offer student tickets at a discount if you just show your college identification badge at the door.

    Share a Ride

Many college students mistakenly believe they must take their cars with them to college. However, this is expensive because you might have to pay to park, you have to find money for gas each week, and you still have to pay for routine maintenance. Instead of taking your own car, it is probably cheaper to walk, take the bus, or even ride your bike. If you do need to travel long distance, you can pay someone a small fee to take you where you need to go. This can save you a lot of money over four years.

Billions of dollars each year in scholarships go unused. This shows how important it is that you do your research and find scholarships that you qualify for. Who doesn’t want to go to college for free and most scholarships help you do just that. Some give you benefits such as special access to useful resources and group trips. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get the first few you apply for, keep trying.

College is expensive. To save money, you just have to think creatively.
