School or work breaks are the best time for lounging in the sun (or on the couch), hitting the road for trips and checking off a few bucket list items.
While you’re on your next vacation or week off, start chipping away at one or more of the following bucket list skills.
Learn a Language
If you’ve been itching to learn a second (or third, or fourth) language, but have been waiting “until you have more time”, ask yourself: what better time to start than when you’re off from work or school?
Ease yourself into it by watching some of your favorite films in your language of interest (with the English subtitles on, of course), download some language-learning apps or games and schedule yourself a few beginner classes.
Worried about learning from scratch in a group setting? Keep in mind that one-on-one classes are an option, such as private French classes online.
Learn a Sport
If you’ve been interested in giving a new sport a try, why not give it a shot while you’ve got some free time on your hands? Even if you’ll be traveling, odds are you’ll be able to find a local gym offering classes on a sport of choice.
If you go that route, you likely won’t even need to buy any equipment right off the bat. If you get in enough practice while you’re away, you may even be able to jump in and join an amateur team when you get back in town.
Learn an Instrument
Many people talk about wanting to learn to play the guitar or piano, but how many people actually carve out the time to do it? Your next break is the perfect time to watch some videos and start the self-teaching process or to try out a beginner lesson or two.

If you’re not quite sure whether you’ll like an instrument or not, check out the instrument rentals at your local music store for affordable lending options. Some rental packages will even include the first few lessons as well.
Checking off your bucket list items often requires a bit of time, so vacations and work/school breaks are a great opportunity to give something new a shot.
While you have a few extra hours in your day, you’ll find that you can invest deeply in a new skill. And who knows? You just might discover a brand-new passion in the end.
