6 First Aid Tips Any College Student Should Know

Having some knowledge of first aid procedures and techniques can be very useful to any college student on their own. The following offers some valuable first aid tips that may help you or others during your college experience and beyond.


    If you accidentally burn yourself with fire or hot oil during cooking, run the burn under cool water for 15-20 minutes to reduce pain. Afterwards, apply burn ointment, cream, or spray on the burn for continued pain relief. Rest your burned area to enhance healing. You can also bandage the area to prevent further irritations and infections. Over the counter pain relief pills can be purchased at any pharmacy to reduce pain during the healing process.


    Nosebleeds can be annoying but are fairly common for those who participate in college sports or other vigorous activities. To stop a nosebleed, lean forward slightly and pinch your nose closed for 5-10 minutes, breathing through your mouth. Do not lie down or tilt your head back as blood could go into your throat. After 10 minutes, check to see if the bleeding has stopped. If so, avoid bending or blowing your nose for several hours to give blood vessels time to heal. If bleeding resumes, repeat the procedure.     Cuts and Abrasions

    Cuts and abrasions can occur in the kitchen just as much as out on the sports field. When they occur, try to stop the bleeding right away by placing a clean towel, gauze, or pad on the wound and applying pressure until the blood begins to clot. Once the bleeding has stopped, clean the wound well with antiseptic and apply antibiotic cream or ointment. Bandage and monitor the cut carefully for signs of infection. Deep or large cuts should be checked out by a physician.

    Migraine Headaches

    With excessive studying during college, comes the risk of migraine headaches, which resulting in pain, nausea, blurred vision, fatigue, dizziness, and other adverse symptoms that will disrupt your studies. First aid treatment of migraines starts with finding a comfortable, quiet place to lie down with pillow support for your head and neck.

    Applying cold packs to your forehead can help alleviate discomfort while massages of the neck, shoulder and head may release muscle tension to alleviate pain. If you need extra pain relief, over the counter painkillers are available at any pharmacy. Contact a doctor if severe migraines are accompanied by extreme pain, weight loss, fever or loss of consciousness.


    College life often involves an array of social activities, which include parties, eating out with friends, etc. At some point, you may confront a situation where a friend is choking and needs immediate help in order to breathe. Your knowledge of the Heimlich maneuver could very well save someone’s life. It is important to make sure the individual is actually choking before performing such a maneuver.

    To perform this maneuver, put your arms around your friend’s waist just above the naval area. Form a fist with one hand and place the other on top. Thrust your fist into your friend’s abdomen, slightly lifting him up and backwards in the process. Keep repeating until food is dislodged and your friend can breathe normally once again.


    Shock can occur as a result of an accident where there is excessive loss of blood or body fluids. When treating shock, have the victim lie on his or her back with their feet elevated so blood can easily flow to the brain. Keep the victim still, warm, and comfortable until medical help arrives. Avoid giving shock victims liquids as it may provoke choking. If vomiting occurs, turn your victim on his side so he or she will not choke.
