College students have a lot on their plates; they are trying to juggle school, work, and their social life.
A car is a big responsibility, but it can also be a big help.
The last thing any student wants to worry about is their car breaking down. Keeping your vehicle in tip-top shape is simple with these four helpful car care tips for college students.
Check Tire Pressure and Tread Depth
One of the most manageable things college students can do to prolong the lifespan of their tires is to check the pressure regularly. The ideal pressure is typically between 30 and 35 PSI, but it’s best to consult the owner’s manual or tire placard to be sure. Newer cars have an indicator on the dashboard to alert you when the pressure is low.
It’s also important to check the tread depth of the tires. To check the tread depth, insert a quarter into the tread with George Washington’s head upside down. If you can see below his head, your tread depth is less than 4/32 of an inch, and it’s time to replace the tires.
Rotate Your Tires
Another major tip to prolong the lifespan of your tires is to rotate them regularly. Rotating helps evenly distribute the wear and tear, which will result in longer-lasting tires.
Most mechanics recommend rotating your tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. This tip is underrated, but it can save you a lot of money in the long run.
Change Your Oil Regularly
This car care tip isn’t discussed enough, but you should change your oil every 3,000 miles or as specified in your car’s owner’s manual.
Dirty oil can cause engine problems. Over time, oil breaks down and becomes contaminated with dirt and debris. Dirty oil can cause your engine to run less efficiently and lead to costly repairs.
To get the best gas mileage, use the lightest weight oil recommended for your car. You can find this information in the owner’s manual or on the oil fill cap under the hood.
Keep the Interior and Exterior Clean
A clean car is a happy car. Not to mention, it’s also much easier to spot potential problems when your vehicle is clean.
Make it a habit to vacuum the floors and seats regularly. Cleaning will help keep the interior looking pristine and prevent dirt and debris from grinding into the carpet and upholstery.
As for the exterior, give it a good wash at least once a week. If you want to do a little more, adding wax or a ceramic coating is worth it for the added protection.
These are just a few car care tips that every college student should know. By following these simple tips, you can help keep your car running smoothly and avoid costly repairs down the road.
