Aquarium fish make great pets for students who have hectic schedules but want to come home to a friend that’s always waiting for them.
However, if you’ve never had to care for a fish on your own, it can be challenging to know which species to choose, especially if you live in an apartment or dorm.
For anyone interested in obtaining an aquatic friend, continue reading to discover what type of aquarium fish are best for beginners.
Goldfish Are an Oldie but a Goodie
Sometimes, you just can’t beat a classic. There’s a reason that a goldfish is practically synonymous with a pet fish. They’re incredibly hardy and adaptable in almost any environment, and if properly fed, they may live for up to 10 years.
Also, keep in mind that your goldfish will grow larger than you may imagine. For an average-sized goldfish, you’ll need at least a 30-gallon tank, and you’ll need at least 55 gallons or more if you want more fish.
Betta Fish Are Incredibly Vibrant
Bettas are well known for being the perfect starter fish because of their relatively small size, beautiful colors, and simple maintenance.
However, it’s a misconception that you can put these fish in any old container, such as a vase, because they still require proper space to thrive.
At a minimum, you should put them in a tank with a soft filter attachment that can accommodate at least 5 gallons.
As they’re social creatures, you might keep them with other fish as long as you don’t couple them with another Betta. You must also take care of their surroundings for them to be happy and healthy.
Angelfish Live Up to Their Namesake
Angelfish are ideal for beginners since they are reasonably resilient fish that can handle a wide range of water conditions. The remarkable angelfish is also incredibly striking, distinguished by its exquisite form, unique fins, and attractive striped pattern.
You should place them in at least a 55-gallon tank since they can grow to be the size of a human fist. Bear in mind that although they’re tough fish, they’re susceptible to disease. To ensure they live in a healthy environment, you need to stay on top of potential contamination, such as elevated ammonia levels.
Zebra Danios Are Cute and Manageable
You may not know the Zebra Danios, but they’re incredibly affordable and look adorable to boot. You’ll find that they’re quiet but sociable creatures that are also resilient, making them easy to care for. They typically live for around five years, and you can pick them up from most pet stores for as little as two dollars.
