  • Dorm rooms have a nasty habit of becoming filled to the brim after everything is moved in. While it can often feel like there is no more space to be found, here are a few tips and tricks to create a little extra room for students that are starting to feel cramped.

    Look Behind Doors

Behind an entryway or bedroom door is one of the easiest places to pick up a little extra space for smaller items. From shoe holders to hooks, any number of items can be hidden away on the back of a door including snacks, jewelry, backpacks, coats, hats and school supplies.

    Ditch the Doubles

For those that do have a roommate, it could be time to sit down and take a look at some of the extras that are lying around. Items such as a second refrigerator or TV could seem fun, but boxing up doubles and putting them in a local storage unit is going to free up much-needed space.

    Bed Risers

Modern bed risers not only lift the bed slightly to make room for storage bins, they can also double as important devices that are needed within the dorms. Countless companies now offer bed risers that double as night lights, fans, extension cords and extra outlets.

    Closet Hangers

Closets are notorious for being filled to the brim and an easy place to lose one’s possessions or accumulate clothes with unwanted smells. Closet hangers are simple devices that come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be attached to almost any hook. From clear plastic hangers for shoes to collapsible hangers for formal clothes, these products are vital to closet organization.

    Mattress and Desk Caddies

When it comes to saving space, extra nightstands or coffee tables are typically out of the question. Mattress and desk caddies will carry out all of the same functions as these flat surfaces without taking up extra floorspace. They either Velcro or clip to any surface and are a great option to store a smartphone, school supplies, memory cards and extra cords.

    Stick to Seasonal Clothes

It is not always going to be practical for students to leave some of their clothes at home, but sticking to seasonal clothing is one of the best ways to save space. During the first few months of fall, boxing up jackets and placing them at home or with a local storage company could free up a huge part of the closet.

Keeping a dorm room clutter-free may seem impossible, but all it takes is a little ingenuity. Finding hidden storage areas and making organization a top priority could mean a little less stress in the long run.
