EMTs are a major part of rescue teams. Becoming involves several steps.
Prerequisites
The amount of training and education required varies from state to state but before beginning, say, a Texas EMT course, there are prerequisites. The minimum requirement for entering an EMT school is a high school diploma and a current CPR certification.
Some states also require basic training in health care.
Basic EMT Course
Having met the prerequisites, the next step is to enroll at a credible EMT school. There, you will receive training in all the functions performed by an EMT.
Included in the training are ride-a-longs in an ambulance with working EMTs. There is a deadline by which to complete your training. Once the course is successfully completed, you can move on to the next step.
The National Registry Exam
Upon completing a basic EMT course, you must register for, and take your state’s National Registry Exam. It is a challenging test that will ensure you have learned and retained the information from your courses.
It should be taken as soon as possible. Waiting too long after completing a course will make it harder to pass.

Background Check and Certification
When you have passed the National Registry Exam, you must pass a background check and be fingerprinted. Once those have been done, you take all of your documentation to your local EMT agency for certification.
EMT can be a rewarding job for people who want to help others in emergencies. It’s a long path to become certified but each step will prepare you to perform the job correctly and help you save lives.
