How to Put Your Health First When You’re Living on a College Student Budget

    Many of the top time-saving strategies that college students use to find more hours in the day can result in added expenses or may be unhealthy.

    The good news is that there are a few ways you can make health a priority without hurting your budget.

    In fact, you may even be able to save money by following some of these helpful tips.

    Ride Your Bike or Walk

    Finding a way to get regular exercise each day can help you to maintain a healthy body weight and get the cardiovascular workout that you need. A smart idea is to ride your bike or walk to class, to your job and to run errands. Depending on where you live, you may be able to get rid of your car. By doing so, you could eliminate car insurance, gas, maintenance costs and more from your budget. Even riding a bike or walking around can decrease your fuel and maintenance expenses.

    Use the School’s Gym

    Another great idea to be even more fit is to use your school’s gym. Many schools have an on-site fitness center that is free or affordable for students to use. You can focus on losing weight, toning muscles and getting a cardio workout. After workouts, hydrate with a recovery drink, such as ASEA, for improved health and well-being.

    Remember that being healthy and active can result in a stronger immune system. This means that getting more exercise on a regular basis may help you to keep medical bills and related expenses as low as possible.     If money is a primary concern, you may be interested in finding a part-time or full-time job while you are in college. Rather than getting a desk job that makes you sedentary for long hours each day, look for a more active job that has you on your feet and moving around. This way, you can burn calories and tone muscles while you are earning a paycheck.

    Being sedentary can lead to obesity, loss of muscle tone and other health issues. Examples of more active jobs for college students may be retail positions in busy stores, delivery services, working in a warehouse environment and more.

    Eat Healthy Meals at Home

    Many college students eat fast food meals on a regular basis because they are convenient and seemingly cheap. However, they often lack nutrients and are loaded with fat, sugar, salt and more. More than that, they may cost much more than you would spend if you make your own meals and snacks.

    Consider that a single fast food meal may cost $5 to $10. For this same amount, you could buy bread, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and sandwich meat. This would give you lunches for the entire week and may be much healthier for you. You also need to pay attention to what you buy at the grocery store. For example, choosing fresh vegetables and fruits is usually more affordable than chips, cookies and other unhealthy options.

    It is easy to feel as though your health and fitness options as a college student are limited, but you can see that you actually may be able to save money and improve your health at the same time when you follow the right lifestyle strategies. Each of these beneficial tips can be used to improve your life in different ways. Take time to determine how these tips can be implemented in your life to enhance your health, well-being and budget at the same time.
