    Let us look at it this way – When a train enters a tunnel, you do not jump out of it. Instead, you wait for the light at the end of the tunnel. Life is quite like a train journey – the pace, the occasional halts, and the hustle along with the quiet. And you can enjoy this journey only when you have the ticket for it – the ticket, as in essential life skills.

    In what follows, I have tried to encapsulate a few life skills that can help you make a glass of lemonade and enjoy it when life gives you lemons.

    Inculcating life skills isn’t anything like writing an assignment with the help of a few tricks. And when it comes to having zeal and passion, there are no hard and fast rules to play by. So, you have to find what lights the fire within you. For example, the face of my little daughter lights up in front of me every time I feel like giving up.

    I know it’s easier said than done, but then most things are. And giving up isn’t an option. Learn to look at the bright side of things. For example, a surprise class test means an opportunity to know where you stand in the class.

    Apart from being positive, trust yourself. Know that you can do it, whatever the situation may be. This will give you the mental strength to get up and work against all the odds and make your way towards a better life.

    Focus and Determination

    Remember Sports Day at school? Every time you participated in a flat race, what was your focus on – the finish line or the rocks and dust on the running tracks? So, you see, you need to focus on what you want your life to look like and keep at it.

    Now, endurance isn’t a skill that you can learn overnight. The next time you go through a tough season, know you are building strength to make it through challenging times. After a few trials, you will learn not only when to duck the bouncers but also how to hit home runs.

    Do you know what does the word Sonder mean? It’s the feeling when you realise that there are thousands of others around you who are living vivid lives and facing adversities, just like YOU. Yes, there are so many others, who like you, are plastering smiles on their faces while living in their share of hell.

    So, do not patronize or sympathize with yourself. If you feel sorry for yourself, stop right there. Moping isn’t going to help you. Also, think of so many others out there who have less than what you have. Be thankful for what you have and try to keep it safe. Here are some ways you can let go of self-pity for good.

    Self-Discipline

    Be it solving a difficult mathematic problem or sticking to a fitness routine; self-discipline can help you accomplish goals even when the road is bumpy. According to a 2013 study, people with better self-control were more capable of dealing with conflicts. When you cultivate self-discipline, you learn to make informed and rational decisions even at the face of adversity.

    To stay consistent, remove temptations and distractions that digress you. Start by making small changes, like limiting your screen time or avoiding hitting the snooze button. At times, your heart will say otherwise. Do not let the devil on your shoulder win.

    Patience and Perseverance

    While in your way towards Zen, you are bound to fail several times. But you must be patient and pick yourself every time. Did you know that the famous scientist Thomas Edison had to face several rejections before it became a scientific breakthrough?

    In the end, remember that you cannot master these life skills overnight. Give yourself time and be consistent. One day life will shine on you. And even if it doesn’t, you will know how to get over it.
